Laurie McRae is an oil painter and fibre artist. She is a guest of Andrea Pyman Varangu on the RRAT Tour for the second year in a row.
“My fibre work is currently featured at Art in the County, and at the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts Gallery in Collingwood and the Local Store in Bloomfield. My work will be part of a special show called “For the Love of Animals” at the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts scheduled for August of this year.
My oil paintings are featured at the Local Store in Bloomfield and at the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts in Collingwood. When you work in several different mediums one can be conflicted about one’s use of time. Admittedly, recently my work has been somewhat skewed towards fibre (including hooked and felted pieces). I find joyful expression in working with textiles. Many of my recent pieces are made entirely of recycled textiles including jerseys and silks. I also love the peaceful, rhythmic nature of rug hooking and the challenge of getting the right mix of colour and heightened texture. While this winter and spring my focus was primarily on creating works in fibre, I will be heading to the easel to work in oil during the months of July and August in preparation for the Sept tour. “
