Artist Statement

Lois creates art using different techniques to express her response to her environment. She and her husband moved to Carrying Place in 2024 to immerse themselves in artistic community established there, as well as the natural beauty and more intentional lifestyle. As a lifelong photographer, she belongs to several photography clubs and has shown and sold her prints for many years while living in Whitby. Much of her work is inspired by the beauty surrounding their second home in Ireland. After retirement Lois learned fluid art to create abstract art and functional pieces. The discovery of the interplay of colour and movement using fluid paints was addictive and immersive. The technique requires significant workspace and storage space over time. To continue a creative practice in much smaller space in Ireland, Lois explore the technique of gelli printing using the same acrylic paints on a paper substrate. Pieces are built up using multiple layers of paint laid down using a brayer on a gelatin based plate and picked up sequentially on the paper. These pieces can be used as standalone pieces or as backgrounds for photographs, or as source material for collages.
