Encaustic Quilter

Guest Artist of Jeff Keary

116 Barley Rd. Rednersville

I took private oil painting classes as a child, then completed the visual arts program at Georges Vanier S.S., and courses at OCA in the early 70’s. I continued to paint, attend life drawing classes and sold re-worked antique quilts & original work at a gallery in Yorkville. A business career took over, but I continued in classes and took up learning the skills of quilting, fabric dyeing, mono prints and painting in encaustic. I am represented at the Scugog Arts Space in Port Perry.

I’d learned about encaustic in school by studying the Fayum portraits and have taken extensive courses with Andrea Bird at Meta4 in Port Perry and at The Hive in Alton, with Susan Fisher at Haliburton School of the Arts and with both Cynthia Winika and Lisa Pressman at R&F Encaustics in New York. I’ve taught numerous beginner classes in encaustic in my studio and usually demonstrate during studio tours.

My quilting journey restarted at the Quilters Cupboard in Uxbridge and I’ve attended many courses in Canada and the US with professional quilters. I have taught advanced quilting courses and lectured on quilting at guilds. I was an active member of my local quilt guild and was the Show Convenor three times.

About 15 years ago I created wonderful studio space in our home and I’ve been working away developing a body of work since then. My studio is a site on the the Lake Scugog Studio Tour held each May and for years I was the Chair of the leadership team. In 2024 I am co-chairing the Studio Tour Committee.

For the past 5 years I’ve been President of the Board of the Scugog Council for the Arts and worked with the board to grow our membership to over 150, with income over $250,000 annually, garnering numerous significant grants from Ontario trillium Foundation, Canada Summer Jobs and Central Counties Tourism along with sponsorships by the Mississaugas of Scugog Island Donations Committee. I volunteer between 80 and 125 hours each month to the organization.

Artist’s Statement

My paintings are in encaustic (beeswax and damar resin) on birch panels or created as mono prints using fabric dyes on paper. I’m inspired by the whimsical colour combinations and strong lines I see in both ur-ban and rural landscapes. These inspirations may lead to representational or abstract work. In my work the viewer gets drawn into layers of luminous colours and rich textures.
